Investing for the long term
The last ten years have been some of the most turbulent in recent stock market history. But our UK Equities team's long-term thinking ignores day-to-day volatility, keeping to the vision of identifying fundamentally strong businesses and investing in those companies that they believe have the potential to generate growth, earnings and dividends over the long term.
That's what they do best.
To our UK equities fund managers it's about focus and conviction. They have no sector, stock or style bias, and in searching for the right opportunities they will look for potential in companies from the smallest start-up to the largest multinational.
And with a continually evolving investment landscape, we think it's reassuring to know that the people managing your investments have true depth of knowledge and experience, both individually and as a team.
"I try to ignore the turbulence and really home in on the important factors within an investment opportunity that is going to deliver the returns that I seek over the long-term."
A team approach
Head of UK Equities Mark Barnett, and fund managers Martin Walker and Ciaran Mallon, have worked together for over 10 years. And while they are all investment experts, unified by a long-term investment approach, each brings a different perspective and distinct style to the portfolios they manage.
The team work in a collegiate environment where thoughts and ideas are exchanged, where challenge and discussion thrive, but where there is individual accountability and responsibility. By harnessing the insights and strengths of the dedicated 10-person UK Equities team, each fund manager seeks to deliver consistent, long-term outperformance for the portfolios they manage.
"Because of our accumulated experience, there are areas where we have strengths versus each other and we're trying to combine those strengths in order to arrive at the right investment decisions."
Philosophy and approach
At the core of the team's philosophy is a belief in active, pragmatic and flexible investment. Their proven approach is based on fundamental analysis, with a strong emphasis on finding those businesses they believe the market has undervalued.
The UK Equities team has three main strategies: Income, Growth and Smaller Companies, which are delivered through a range of eight ICVC funds and six investment trusts. These different and complementary strategies provide access to the fund managers' individual approaches.
